| Welcome to Year 2 of Music! Not Mischief |
| |
MUSIC! Not Mischief is very proud to announce the inclusion of 2 new schools for the 2009/2010 season. St Mary's Catholic Secondary School asked for MUSIC! last year, one week after Parkdale Collegiate accepted. With the pilot focus of the inaugural year on one school, St Mary's was forced to wait patiently for Year 2. Here it is and the kids at St Mary's are even more excited to host MUSIC! this year having seen what was accomplished last year. St Mary's has come out of the gate in a big way. MUSIC! Not Mischief kicked off at St Mary's in September. TV Ontario finished shooting a documentary feature on MUSIC! while Mike Carparelli showed off some of the guitars coming to the school. AND during all this, Matt Rahn, lead singer from Tracenine was on hand to meet the kids and sign autographs. The kids were PUMPED! They lined up to meet Matt and ask Rob when they could get down to playing. At one point, Mikey, Matt and Rob turned to eachother and mutually said, "Wow!" in reference to the excitement of the kids.
It was through meeting the faculty at St Mary's that MUSIC! was brought to the attention of Central Commerce Collegiate. Commerce was quick to ask for the program but was initially turned down due to a lack of resources and officers to participate.
Sadly, Year 1 host school Parkdale Collegiate Institute declined involvement in MUSIC! for Year 2. We will all miss the kids from Parkdale.
Nonetheless, the door opened for Commerce who accepted and welcomed MUSIC! in almost no time at all. Commerce has its own faculty rock band and the Principal, Mr. David Buhler plays guitar in the house band. Oddly enough, and perhaps through word of mouth, kids were asking at the school admin office if MUSIC! was coming to Commerce even before the official pitch was made. And like St Mary's, Commerce administrators and faculty have the same open door, pro-student enrichment, think-out-of-the-box orientation.
These 2 new schools promise to make this year of MUSIC! Not Mischief more exciting and fun than anyone could have imagined. And at the end of the day, it's all about being able to deliver the message that crime, drugs and gangs are unhealthy, and that cops and kids can rock and roll together, creating a life-long positive memory. In the process, we facilitate the gift of music, which we know helps foster other skills related to academic excellence. Everybody wins. |

MUSIC! Not Mischief is proud to congratulate Micah Fysh of Parkdale Collegiate, winner of the Year 1 finale concert competition. Micah rocked the audience and judges with his rendition of Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" and won his cherry red, Badasse guitar. Celebrity judges for Micah's performance included Marshall Dane, Jeff Jones of Red Rider, Nick Sinopoli of The Carpet Frogs, Alan Marginean of KillerAudio, JP from littleSUNDAY, Scott Penfold of 94.9 The Rock fm, Supt Ruth White of 14 Division and Juno Award winner Nick Walsh of Slik Toxik and Revolver.
In May 2009, he went on to play again live and acoustic with Tracenine at the ProAction Annual Awards ceremony where Constable Tajti relieved ProAction's "Jack Sinclair Award" for the Most Innovative New Program. In June, Micah rocked an outdoor audience when he was able to play the historic Fort York grounds with littleSUNDAY in support of 14 Division's Community Fun Day and to promote MUSIC! Not Mischief to students from other area schools. Micah is a true rock star. Good work!

| What Is Music! Not Mischief? |
| |
|
MUSIC! Not Mischief is a youth outreach program partnering the Toronto Police with Dot On Shaft Guitars, ProAction Cops & Kids and local secondary school students. Since September 2008, police officers from 14 Division have engaged students from Parkdale Collegiate Institute (PCI) in a regular lunch time jam session, imparting a pro-community, anti-crime, anti-drug message while practicing the guitar.
Some of the students will be selected to play in a year-end rock concert before members of the community and their peers. Those students will get to be a "rock star for a day" as they perform with real rock stars "Tracenine". Performances are judged by a panel of celebrity judges from the Canadian music industry and the community as the performers compete for ownership of a guitar package supplied by Carparelli Guitars.
By allowing MUSIC! Not Mischief students to perform before the community, they not only come to realize the reach and scope of what they have been working on during the program, but they create an intense series of positive experiences that will reinforce the anti-drug, anti-crime messages that they received from their police mentors.

| About ProAction Cops & Kids: |
| |
| ProAction is a charity that funds projects and activities, initiated and run by police officers, which engage kids at risk. Its goal is to build trust and mutual respect between cops and kids, helping kids at risk before they become kids in trouble. |

 |
Youth violence and drug exposure has been the unfortunate reality to too many of today's kids. When we as adults reflect back on our own youth, we can reference those changes as we ask ourselves, "When is it going to end? Is there something more that we could be doing? Maybe kids need more opportunity to get invovled in something healthy."
It doesn't help when our children are inundated with the often negative imagery of modern music. The same music asks them to embrace their youthful angst by engaging in fringe activities and distancing themselves further from the positivity that family and REAL devotion to music has to offer.
Music has to be more than just a voyeuristic experience. And we can't allow the worst of modern music to suck our kids into a vacuum of negativity.
